Game review tells you what went wrong. Then you forget it by the next game.
You glance at the red move, nod, and queue another blitz game. Two weeks later you hang the same knight. Random puzzles don't help much either: they're someone else's positions.
Rest in Pieces turns your own mistakes into puzzles. You get one move with no takeback, and your score keeps track of whether you learnt anything.
How it works
-
I
Link your chess.com username
We read your public games, so there's no password to hand over. Your last week of rated rapid, blitz and daily games comes in right away, then new ones every day.
-
II
We dig up your blunders
Stockfish checks every move you made. The worst one in each game, if it threw away at least 20 points of win probability, gets a tombstone in your Graveyard.
-
III
Face it with one move
Your opponent's last move replays and the board is yours. The first move you play is final. Then you see the engine's best move next to the one you blundered.
Every blunder ends one of three ways
The worse the original blunder, the more is at stake. How bad it was stays hidden until you've moved.
- Exorcised
- You found a good move. It rests in peace, and you earn its Points.
- Ghost
- You dodged the blunder but still lost too much. It haunts your Graveyard forever.
- Zombie
- You played the very same blunder again. It rises from the grave, and it costs you Points.
Questions
Do I need to give you my chess.com password?
No. Rest in Pieces only reads your public games through chess.com's public API, so all it needs is your username.
Which games are imported?
Rated rapid, blitz and daily games. Bullet, unrated games and variants like Chess960 are skipped.
How far back does it go?
Your last week of games when you sign up, then every game you finish from then on, synced daily.
What counts as a blunder?
A move of yours that drops your win probability by at least 20 points out of 100. Only the worst one in each game is kept, and your opponent's moves never count.
Do I have to find the engine's exact best move?
No. Any move within 3 points of the best move's win probability exorcises the blunder, as does any mate or the only winning move.
Why does it disagree with chess.com's Game Review?
chess.com doesn't share its review labels, so we run our own Stockfish analysis on every game, and some of its verdicts will differ from chess.com's.
Why only one Attempt?
A real game gives you one too, and knowing the move is final makes you calculate.
Does it work on my phone?
It's built for phones first, and you can add it to your home screen to use it like an app.
What about Lichess?
Only chess.com for now.
Is it free? Can I leave?
It's free for now. You can delete your account and everything in it whenever you like.
